Keypad entry systems are by far the most common type of access control system. For single-family residential driveway access or a small commercial property, a keypad mounted on the entrance to the gate allows individual users to enter a PIN number that unlocks the gate to allow entrance. For multi-user commercial sites or for communities with many residential units, multi-user keypads can be set up to support hundreds or even thousands of PIN codes for individual users. Telephone entry systems are also available and are used in many situations, such as in apartment communities or office buildings, where visitors can call the resident or resident or property manager to allow entrance through the release of a gate lock by the press of a key on the telephone used by the resident or property manager to answer the call.

Card and fob reader systems are similar to keypads in their functionality, however instead of entering in a code, users are issued a proximity card or key fob that can be read by a reader near the gate. The reader communicates with the gate operator to open the gate for the authorized user. These types of systems are very popular in commercial and multi-tenant residential properties, because it is easy to add or remove users from the system by simply deactivating their card or fob. For example, if an employee leaves a resident moves out, their card or fob can be deactivated by the system administrator.
