Opener Performance

Optimize Your Opener Settings

A garage door opener that is not adjusted properly can cause many problems with your garage door. Some of the problems that can occur are a garage door that reverses before it is fully closed, a garage door that will not going all the way up when it is opened, a garage door that slams down when it is closed, or a garage door opener that puts a lot of strain on the motor to move the door. These problems are not typically a sign of a failing garage door opener but rather a sign that the settings on the garage door opener have been changed from the default setting and have drifted from the proper setting over time.

Smart Garage Door Service offers Garage Door Opener Adjustments in Denver Metro and performs them on the same day you call.

FAQ

Common Questions

Why does my garage door reverse before it fully closes?
Misaligned safety sensors, incorrect set travel limits, or incorrect force settings can cause your garage door to reverse before it closes completely. Our Garage Door Service Professionals are able to make the proper adjustments needed to your garage door opener to have it operating correctly without replacing any parts.
Typically this type of problem is caused by the open travel limit for the opener not being set correctly. It is set so that the door travels the correct amount of distance when opening. If the open travel limit is set too low then the door will not open up all of the way. We can set the open travel limit for your garage door so that it will open up to the correct amount of distance every time.
Spring replacement, moving the garage where the opener is mounted, or mere vibration over time can cause the settings for your garage door opener to drift out of their optimal range over time, and require readjustment.
Adjusting the travel limits and force of the opener are generally something that can be done by a homeowner, and the instructions for how to do this are found in the manual for the garage door opener. However, it is very important to make sure that the force of the opener is set so that it does not compromise the safety reversal system. This means that if you are not confident in your ability to adjust these settings, it is best to call a professional to make the necessary adjustments for you.

In order to maintain proper function of your garage door opener, several key settings need to be within the proper range. Travel limits are used to define how far the garage door travels in both the open and close direction. The most common issue with the travel limits is for the door to stop short of being fully open. The open travel limit needs to be set so that the door can travel far enough to allow it to be fully open. If the door is not allowed to travel far enough, it will stop at the top of the garage door with a gap between the door and the garage door track.

Conversely, the close travel limit needs to be set so that the door can close all the way to the ground. If the close travel limit is set too short, the door may push the bottom of the door against the floor or against the stop bolts at the end of the tracks. The door may also cause excessive wear on the opener motor if it is not set correctly.
