The most common cause of a garage door not closing is a problem with the safety sensors. Modern garage door openers have required safety sensors to be installed near the floor on both sides of the garage door opening since 1993. These safety sensors project an invisible infrared beam across the garage door opening. If the infrared beam is broken or if the safety sensors are not aligned properly, are dirty, or are damaged in some way, the garage door will not close down. The garage door opener light(s) will blink out a specific pattern of lights to indicate that there is a problem with the safety sensors.
Even the smallest amount of bumping or hitting of the garage door can cause the sensors to get out of alignment with each other. This causes problems for your garage door because the sensors will no longer be able to recognize that the garage door has been closed. This can be identified by the lights on the sensors of your garage door. The green light on one of the sensors should be solid, and the amber light on the other should be as well. However, if one of the lights is out, or is blinking, or is even red, then your sensors are not working properly and will cause your garage door to have problems closing.

Dirty sensor lenses are another cause for sensor problems. Since garage door opener safety sensors have very small lenses it is easy for dust, cobwebs, and debris to accumulate on the lenses and in turn block the infrared beam. Simply wiping down the lenses with a dry cloth will occasionally resolve the issue of a garage door not closing.
The close travel limit may also be set too short causing the door to stop short of the floor. In this case, the garage door may appear to be closed when in reality there is a large gap at the bottom of the door. This is a fairly simple setting to adjust and usually does not require a service call unless you are unsure of how to change the setting.
A garage door that won’t close also can be caused by the open force setting being set too sensitive. This causes the door to reverse as soon as it comes into contact with the floor. This is a simple setting to adjust without needing any parts.
