There are many reasons a garage door won’t open.
There are many parts of a garage door that could be the problem and many reasons for each part to malfunction. By far the most common cause for a garage door that won’t open is a broken torsion spring or a broken extension spring. A broken garage door spring causes the garage door to become to heavy for the opener to lift. When a spring breaks it often makes a loud bang and can cause injury. It is very common for people to here a loud noise from their garage and then go outside to find that the door no longer opens. It is also common for a spring to slowly break over time. This can cause the door to be hard to open. It can also cause the door to fall at random times. A broken garage door spring should be replaced as soon as possible.

A dead opener or a malfunctioning opener can also cause this type of problem. Often times this can be a problem with the drive mechanism of the opener (i.e. the chain, belt or screws). In some instances the opener may not even make a sound when pressed for remote open or wall open. This can sometimes be a simple fix such as a tripped circuit breaker or perhaps the unit was simply unplugged.
A disconnected opener trolley is also a cause for this problem. Typically someone unintentionally pulls the red emergency release cord on the opener or it came loose in storage. When the trolley is pulled away from the wall, the door will not operate, however the opener will continue to run as long as the cord is pulled out. This is a very easy problem to fix, simply reconnect the trolley to the opener.
Broken or jumped garage door cables will prevent the garage door from being able to open as well. This is usually due to a broken or slipped cable on the garage door, or from the cables having been previously jumped. The door will appear to be stuck in the closed position or it may only open partially before falling.
