Standard garage door track systems are bent from vertical along the garage wall to horizontal just above the top of the door opening. This allows the door to travel up the vertical sections of the track, and then continue horizontally along the ceiling of the garage. As you can see from the illustration, most of the space in the garage above the door opening is consumed by the door as it travels up the vertical sections of the track.
A high lift garage door conversion extends the upper section of the track system above the typical garage door height. The door travels up the side of the garage higher than normal before crossing to the horizontal section of the track above the garage door opening. When open, the door can now sit much higher in the ceiling providing ample room for overhead storage of garages with tall ceilings. These garage doors can be particularly useful for 2 post car lifts or overhead storage in garage workshop spaces where there is a lot of ceiling height available.
