Garage door opener repair or replacement: how to decide?
The age of your garage door opener and the nature of the problem that is occurring are two of the biggest factors that we consider when we are determining whether or not you would benefit from having your garage door opener repaired or replaced. If your opener is less than 10 years old and is having problems with a single part or component such as a gear, circuit board, or the drive mechanism, then it is likely that you will be able to have it repaired for a lower cost than if you were to have to replace the entire unit. However, if your opener is more than 15 years old, does not have all of the current safety features, or has already required a number of repairs, then it is probably going to be more cost effective for you in the long run to have the unit replaced.
There are three types of garage door openers: Chain Drive Garage Door Openers, Belt Drive Garage Door Openers, and Screw Drive Garage Door Openers. All three will lift your garage door but have many differences in design and use. The Chain Drive Garage Door Openers use a metal chain that runs around pulleys and along a track to lift the door. They are the least expensive garage door opener available but can be quite loud. The Belt Drive Garage Door Openers use a rubber belt that goes around pulleys but does not touch them. They are by far the quietest garage door opener available, making them a great choice for garages that are attached to a home. The Screw Drive Garage Door Openers use a long threaded steel rod that is turned by a motor to lift the door. These openers are very low maintenance but can be affected by extreme hot or cold weather.
Most garage door openers last 10 to 15 years. Some may last longer with regular service and maintenance. When your garage door opener is approaching the 15 year mark, or has exceeded this life span, it is wise to have it serviced to ensure it is operating safely.
