Safety sensors for garage doors are required by law for all automatic garage doors. The purpose of these sensors is to prevent the door from closing on people, pets, and objects. Your two safety sensors have to be aligned and pointing straight at each other. If they get bumped out of alignment, this will cause problems with the door operation. Why does my garage door go down a few inches and then reverse?
This is an almost universal symptom of a sensor problem, often caused by misaligned sensors, dirty lenses, or a failed sensor. It can also be a result of opener force settings being set too high. We can diagnose the problem for you.
The two safety sensors are mounted on the bottom of the door tracks, on either side of the garage door opening. These are a few inches off of the floor and are facing each other. The sensor on the left is an emitter and it sends out an invisible infrared beam to the receiver on the right. The receiver senses when the beam has been broken and sends a signal back to the garage door opener.
Yes, this is a simple job that the average homeowner can complete themselves. The first thing you will need to do is loosen the mounting bracket to adjust the sensor. Once you have done this aim the sensor until the indicator light shows a solid and steady light. Once you have achieved this re tighten the bracket. If the light then starts to blink or goes out altogether then the problem is more than likely to be with the wiring or the sensor itself rather than the alignment.
