The amount of space you need for a sliding gate is roughly the width of your driveway plus a few more feet for the gate to be attached to the fence on both ends. For a 12 foot wide driveway, a sliding gate would require approximately 13 to 15 feet of fence line along the opening of your driveway. A sliding gate is typically supported by a track or a set of wheels on the fence line and a bottom track on the driveway. This bottom track is embedded in the ground or attached to the surface of the driveway. A cantilever gate is a style of sliding gate that is not supported by a bottom track. Instead, the gate is supported by a set of posts on one end of the gate opening and a set of rollers on the posts that the gate Panel(s) rest upon. This type of gate is typically more expensive than a sliding gate with a bottom track but it has several advantages. For one, it is far superior on uneven driveways. Ice and snow are not a problem with this style gate as the gate does not come into contact with the ground. In some cases, a property may have a driveway and a parking lot, and the property line for the fence may be in the middle of the parking lot. In this case, a cantilever gate is the perfect solution as it does not require clearance on the driveway side of the fence line.
