Critical Component

Maintain Your Door's Equilibrium

Your garage door system has many parts but none more critical than your torsion springs. They have to hold the entire weight of your door. That is several hundred pounds of steel, wood or composite materials. Then your garage door opener has to lift a fraction of that weight to open your door. Without proper tension in your torsion springs, the rest of the garage door system is affected.

We can send a technician to perform your torsion spring adjustments in the Denver Metro area with same-day availability.

A torsion spring is a component that is full of stored mechanical energy, which is put into the spring as it is wound up on every close of the door. This mechanical energy is then released on every open of the door to pull the door up. It is very critical that the amount of tension in a torsion spring is equal to the weight of the door times the number of times that the door is opened and closed.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is Your Garage Door’s Torsion Spring Out of Tension?

The most reliable way to check if the tension in your springs is off is to perform a manual balance test. To perform the manual balance test, first pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the opener from the door. Next, manually lift the door to a height of about waist high (3-4 feet). Let the door go and check to see if it stays in place or not. If the door stays in place then the springs are properly tensioned. If the door falls down then the springs have too little tension. If the door rises up then the springs have too much tension.

Yes. We strongly advise against attempting to do a torsion spring adjustment. The springs are under extreme tension. If not wound and unwound using the proper tools and with the proper knowledge of the number of turns to add or release, the springs can release suddenly and cause severe injury. It is not worth the risk. Smart Garage Door Service of Denver performs torsion spring adjustments on a same day basis. Call us today at (720) 299-5604 for a quote.

Our estimates for a spring adjustment are provided as part of the cost for a spring adjustment. It is usually provided as part of our garage door tune-up service or as a separate service call.

Torsion springs generally last for 10,000 cycles before needing to be replaced. Assuming a 4 cycle per day operation, this would translate to approximately 7 years of life. Some springs are even made to be high-cycle springs and can be rated for up to 25,000 or more cycles. These high-cycle springs are a good option for homes with very high usage.

This means that for every cycle of the door, that the weight of the door is being pulled up by the stored mechanical energy in the spring. If there is not enough tension in a torsion spring, the door becomes to heavy for the opener to lift, which can cause the opener to strain and even break. An opener that is strained and is working to open a door that is to heavy can cause the opener to wear out much faster. On the other hand, if there is to much tension in a torsion spring, the door will open to fast, and can put a lot of stress on the cables and on the drums that the cables wrap around. In addition, opening a door that has to much tension in the spring can even be hazardous to a person that is manually opening the door.

Spring tension changes with the following factors. The spring loses tension as the spring metal fatigues with each opening and closing. As temperature drops, the metal contracts. When a spring is replaced, or a cable is replaced, the remaining springs are subjected to a new load. Springs can be installed with the wrong amount of tension from the factory.
